New Single-Camera Collision Alert System for 2012 GMC Terrain

No matter how cautious a driver you may be, everyone can use a second set of eyes when it comes to accident prevention. Now, thanks to GMC, that second set of eyes comes in a far less complex package. Priced at only $295, the first ever single-camera crash avoidance system will debut as a featured option for the new 2012 GMC Terrain models.

The single eye of the Terrain safety system uses a high-resolution digital camera that scans the environment for shapes of vehicles and lane markings. Video frames are then analyzed by software, establishing the path and time to collision of another vehicle if adjustments are not employed. It is this number-crunching software that enables the single camera capability and gives the GMC system an edge over other systems weighed down by bulky hardware. As an added safety bonus, the Terrain brakes are pre-primed to deliver best performance when called upon.

In order to demonstrate just how the alert program works a GMC press release explains,  "At night, the system looks for pairs of lights moving together to help spot other vehicles, and vehicle speed, accelerator and brake application are factored in to help the system figure out what the driver's intent is."1

When potential danger is detected, a green "vehicle ahead" or "lanes detected" icon will flash on the GMC Terrain warning display. If the system detects the impending threat of a front-end crash, flashing red "forward collision alert" and amber "lane departure warning" icons will sound off warning chimes. Forward collision alerts operate at speeds over 25 mph and lane departure warnings commence once the vehicle has hit 35 mph.
